Teachers

Elena Figarola

I started practising yoga in 1990 as a hobby, attending classes twice a week. Gradually, yoga took greater precedence in my life and in 1995 I completed a training course to become a teacher of  Hatha yoga.
In 1999, a vocational crisis led me to give up my job working in Film Production and Advertising. I left for India with the aim of studying meditation in depth and finding a new, less stressful direction to my life. What in principle was to be a one-year sabbatical became three years.
Destiny brought me to Mysore, where I became acquainted with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who introduced me to Ashtanga Yoga. I practiced for 5 months at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute and I must confess that discovering this yoga technique revolutionized my life. In 2000, I practised for a year in New York with Guy Donahaye and later returned to India for six months to develop my teaching skills. Since then I have been travelling to India periodically to deepen my understanding of the practice of Ashtanga and have completed various intensive courses with Peter Sanson, Tomás Zorzo and Lino Miele.
On returning to Barcelona in 2002, having been away for three years, I felt the need to create a centre where I could teach and share the knowledge of Ashtanga, faithfully following the same traditional method of teaching that I had received. The philosophy of the centre is to maintain the teaching of Ashtanga Yoga in its purest form, with the desire to consolidate a small community of practitioners who can share the experience of Ashtanga Yoga and disseminate this thousand-year-old technique.

I was born in Santiago, Chile in 1983. I have a degree in Dance with a specialisation in Performance. I have worked with the body and movement from the age of 16, educating myself in Classical, Modern and Contemporary Dance and constantly looking for new techniques related to the body and performance. It was on this search that I found Ashtanga Yoga. What  initially served as physical training to complement my practice as a dancer, with time became a personal necessity and a way of seeing life.

My first teacher was Loreto Cortes in Ashtanga Yoga Chile, where I practiced from 2005 and with whom I learned not only the primary series of asanas but also the importance of consistency and discipline in yoga. In 2007 I came to Barcelona and met Elena Figarola, first as a student and after some months as her assistant. Elena has trained me as a student as well as one of the centre’s teachers, bestowing me with her experience and her confidence. I have participated in two workshops with Peter Sanson, who is certified by Sri K Pattabhi Jois and one of the world’s most experienced Astanguis.

I have been practising Ashtanga, meditation and different healing techniques for 6 years. I am trained in psychology but I have worked mainly in the world of education in the non-profit sector, collaborating in different projects around the world. During my stay in Rio de Janeiro a friend introduced me to Ashtanga and I began practicing on my own. On returning to Barcelona in 2006 I started practicing with Elena Figarola and later with Nick Evans, both authorized Ashtanga teachers. To continue my training I participated in workshops with Peter Sanson and went to Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore in 2008. Over the last year I have assisted Elena in her classes, training as a teacher of Ashtanga and benefiting from her valuable knowledge, advice and experience. In my case, what began as a weekly practice, with time has become an integral part of my life. I feel that Ashtanga has initiated me on a journey of self-searching and discovery, which I experience with greater awareness. Shahriar
